Lucky Beasties

Another recurring character is the jester, fool or joker. Not necessarily lucky in and of themselves, the court jester was an entertainer employed by a royal or noble family and paid to entertain them and their guests at banquets and parties. They were usually dressed in brightly-coloured costumes made of different colours and materials (often known as ‘motley’).

Jesters and jokers were never considered lucky during this time. Their role was to amuse and entertain, and sometimes, particularly whenever Shakespeare wrote about them, to puncture the egos of the rich and influential with bitter truths. It was not until they started to appear in decks of cards that luck became a factor. This is because in some games allow for the introduction of a ‘wild’ card - given that the joker was the best spare card in the deck (the others being instructions or other dry text), it was often the best choice to play this part. Getting a wild card is usually a good thing, because you can decide its value yourself.
